The jury members were recruited by Lebanon Opportunities. The main criteria for their selection were their independence from the banking sector, their understanding of some aspects of commercial banking or communication, their dedication to the process, and their reputation for integrity. Salim Chahine

Associate Professor of Finance and the Director of the MBA Program at AUB. He has consulted extensively in both the public and the private sectors in Europe, North Africa, and the GCC and has developed significant exposure to Private Banking, Asset Management, Firm Valuation, and Risk Management. He is widely published in international academic journals. He has taught in several universities including the Johnson School-Cornell, the University of London, and others. He is the recipient of a number of awards. He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Aix-Marseille III, and two MSc in Financial Engineering and in Banking and Finance.

 


Gabriel Deek

He is the General Manager of OmniSystems (MDS Group). He has over 25 years experience in providing business solutions to the banking and corporate sectors. He founded and managed a number of IT companies and was involved in projects related to eBusiness, Banking Infrastructure, and other sectors. He is the president of the Professional Computer Association. He is involved in community initiatives aiming to bridge the Digital Divide. He has chaired the Organizing Committee of the Golden Chip Awards since its creation in 1999. He is a Special Ambassador for the World Summit Award, a UN GAID supported initiative.


Youssef Fawaz

Executive Director of Al Majmoua, the leading microfinance institution in Lebanon, which he co-founded. Al-Majmoua has a balance sheet of $12 million, employing 150 people in 15 offices nationwide. It serves around 23,000 clients and disburses 35,000 loans annually. Al-Majmoua became the first micro-credit enterprise in Lebanon to be rated by Planet Rating (B+ 2010), a leading rating agency specialized in microenterprises. He teaches at the American University of Beirut. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from AUB, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley .


Ayman Haddad

CEO of Heidrick&Struggles for the MENA region, a large multinational leadership consulting firm. Over the past 20 years he was a consultant and Managing Partner at Arthur Andersen and Price Waterhouse in the US and in Europe. He set up the Middle East consulting practice for Price Waterhouse and now for Heidrick&Struggles. He is specialized in the Financial Services sector and works closely with Chairmen and CEOs of regional banks, advising them on their strategy, people and operations. He holds a MBA from the University of Chicago and a Master’s in Computer Engineering from University of Technology in Compiegne, France. He is a founder and a board member of the first regional Board of Directors Institute.


Ramez Maluf

Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah, on a sabbatical from LAU. He has been a journalist for more than three decades, serving as editor in chief of a number of publications and has contributed numerous articles and columns to international publications, including the International Herald Tribune, the Washington Times, and Foreign Policy. He is a lecturer in and practitioner of Public Relations. He was head of the department of international relations at Solidere. He is the author of a number of scholarly articles in the field of communication and Arab media. He graduated from Duke University and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.


Tony Shwayri

He has worked in international, regional and local banks as senior staff, member of the board, and as a managing director. Former member of the board of the Lebanese Banking Association, and chair and member of the research committee at the association. Lecturer at AUB and LAU in risk management, stock markets, fundamental and technical analysis, bank management and internal control. He participated and lectured about the financial crisis, good governance, and multi-dimensional economical problems at the IMF and the EuroMed. He wrote numerous articles about banking issues and regulations, de-leveraging and capital reconstitution, diversification and internal rating approach vis à vis other approaches adopted by international rating agencies, dealing with their major strengths and weaknesses.
